The German Democratic Republic was founded on October 7, 1949 and came to an end on October 3, 1990. At least, that’s the version of history we know. A failed experiment. But how much do we really know about the real story (or stories)?

RED OR DEAD was an immersive performance about political participation and the (re)construction of the course of history and memory. From the summer of 2017 to the winter of 2019, a five-part serial format invited the audience to make new decisions regarding the turning points of the history of the GDR and to discuss them. During the lockdown, the 32 hours of film material of the performances that had been collected were converted into a hybrid film version that oscillates between DEFA (the East German state-owned film company) and documentary.
